The Highly Skilled Professional Visa Is Better Than You Think

Most foreign professionals in Japan are on a standard work visa. A meaningful number of them would have qualified for Highly Skilled Professional status and never ran the numbers.

It costs an hour to check. The upside is one of the largest available in the entire system.

What you get

• Five-year period of stay, granted from the start.
• Permanent residency in three years instead of ten. At eighty points or more, one year.
• Your spouse can work without needing their own qualifying work visa. For couples this is often the single biggest quality-of-life difference.
• You may bring a parent under certain conditions, usually related to childcare, which is otherwise nearly impossible.
• Domestic helper permission, under conditions.
• Multiple activities permitted. You can run a business alongside employment, which a standard work visa does not readily allow.
• Preferential processing. Applications are handled faster.

The permanent residency acceleration is the one to focus on. Ten years is the standard road. Three years, or one, changes your whole relationship with the country: you stop planning around renewal cycles and start planning around your life.

How the points work

Points come from a table, and you need 70 to qualify. The categories are:

Academic background. Doctorate scores highest, then master's, then bachelor's. Multiple degrees in different fields add a bonus.

Career history. Years of relevant professional experience, on a sliding scale.

Annual salary. Scored with age taken into account, which is the part people miss. A given salary is worth more points at thirty than at forty-five, because the table rewards being well paid early.

Age. Younger scores higher.

Bonus points, and this is where borderline cases get over the line: Japanese language ability (JLPT N1 is worth a lot, N2 less but still useful), graduating from a Japanese university, working at a company receiving innovation support, holding a relevant patent, research achievements, and graduating from a highly ranked university.

The three categories are Advanced Academic Research, Advanced Specialised/Technical, and Advanced Business Management. The tables differ, so score yourself against the right one. Most engineers, designers and specialists fall in the second.

Where people leave points on the table

They do not count the language bonus. N2 is achievable with genuine but not heroic study and is worth real points. If you are sitting at 60 or 65, this is often the cheapest ten points available.

They score themselves against the wrong table. Business Management has different thresholds than Specialised/Technical.

They assume salary alone decides it. It is heavily weighted, but a well-qualified younger applicant on a moderate salary can clear seventy on education, age and language.

They do not re-check after a raise or a degree. Your score is not fixed. If you were at 65 two years ago, run it again.

J-Skip and J-Find

Two newer routes that sit alongside the points system.

J-Skip skips the points table entirely for people who clear high thresholds directly, on a combination of academic background or professional experience together with a substantial salary. If you are senior and well paid, check this before doing the points arithmetic. It is faster and comes with the strongest benefits.

J-Find is different in kind: it is for recent graduates of highly ranked universities to come to Japan and look for work or prepare to start a business, without a job offer in hand. If you graduated from a top-ranked university within the last few years, this is a genuine door that most people do not know exists.

Worth saying plainly

The status is not a reward for being impressive. It is a policy instrument: Japan wants specific kinds of people and has decided to make it easier for them. Using it is not gaming anything, it is responding to an invitation.

Check your score. Then check it again if you are close, because the bonus categories are where borderline applications become successful ones. And if you clear it, apply, even if you already hold a perfectly functional work visa. Trading up costs an application and buys years.
